Small business challenges
Business Continuity Plans or BCPs are sometimes viewed as a little bit of black magic or something only “big business” needs. If anything, a BCP is more important for a little business or start-up that doesn’t have a war chest of cash or customers to fall back on. Maybe it should be called your Business Continuing Plan? Whatever you call it, you need the Business Continuity tools, knowledge and experience to protect your small business.
At KingsBridge, as a boutique BCP company, we know all about making the sacrifices to ensure business runs as smoothly as possible. As with all small businesses, you learn to leverage as many freeware tools that you can get your hands on. In the case of BCP, I’ll share with you two of the best (not just because they are our tools). One gives you the knowledge and one gives you the actual tool you need.
Continuing your business isn’t anything you aren’t used to on a regular basis. Unfortunately, during an incident that impacts your business, it’s not business as usual. So knowing (a) what you’ll need, (b) where to keep it (readily accessible!), and (c) how to execute it is going to require some planning. Before you start to back-up EVERYTHING, take a step back and look at your daily requirements. For this, it’s helpful to view your requirements from a nice-to-have -> need-to-have -> must-have -> critical-to-have basis. How do you know when enough is enough? What situations might you find your business in?
To help you answer these questions and think about how to best protect your business, take some time to learn Business Continuity Planning in 14 simple 2-5 minute videos that show you the basics of BCP. THIS is where you’ll get all the taught knowledge you’ll ever need: https://www.kingsbridgebcp.com/bcp-academy/bcp-academy-101/.
KingsBridge is a second generation BCP company. My Dad started it in 1983 (I was 10); as a result I’ve had a lot of exposure to the business and to the field my whole life. I started in BCP in 1999, so more than 20 of my 47 years have been spent working in BCP, day in and day out. Why am I telling you all this? I’m sharing this to help you understand my point about experience. While the books teach us all sorts of fundamentals, experience tells us a lot of those can be “short-cutted” into getting it done now. I’m not telling you to NOT stop at the stop sign; I AM telling you nobody with any driving experience actually waits the “fundamental” 3 seconds.
In the case of BCP, the fundamentals tell you to consider EVERY threat; the experience tells you to worry about the results that could affect your business. Don’t worry, we wrote a post about it here: https://www.kingsbridgebcp.com/no-building-no-people-no-systems-no-suppliers/ to help you understand the entire concept.
“Always have the best tools for the job”… We’ve heard that since we tried using a screwdriver to nail two boards together! In order to reduce a “barrier to entry”, KingsBridge took its already simple and secure Business Continuity tool and made a FREE edition.
True, Shield – Free Edition doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that our Platinum (enterprise) level tool does, but you’re a small business: you don’t “need” the $2000/month expense. You NEED the free tool to get your Business Continuing Plan written and ready for any sort of outage. No credit card required; it really is free.
While BCP isn’t a very difficult concept to understand it’s not always documented in an easy-to-use way. We believe Business Continuity is for every size business, and we make it easy for you to protect your business. Check out our post on using free Shield: https://www.kingsbridgebcp.com/build-your-bcp-for-free-really/.
BCP is also something that seems to make small business owners want to stick their heads in the sand. If recent times have taught us anything, it’s that YES, it can and will happen to you; NO, you might not have complete control over the aftermath; so you best be prepared. Let KingsBridge help.
